Choose Your Weapon

WEAPON #1-POCKET KNIFE

On Wednesday Carter and a couple of friends ask to use their pocket knifes. All the parents said yes and the boys went to get their knifes. About 5 minutes later I went inside to make a phone call and when I walked in the kitchen Carter was standing at the table. It took me a few seconds to process what I was seeing but once I did I realized that Carter was bleeding everywhere. I grabbed his hand and grabbed a clean rag and held tight until I could see what he had done. It turned out that he had almost cut the top of his pinky off.

I walked with him outside and yelled for Shawn and told him we proably needed to get stitches. He had to process for a minute and then he said "Pocket Knife!" Well lucky for us Shawn works with plastic surgeons. He made a quick call to his hand doctor who told us to just use the medical super glue and wrap it up and that would be good. So it took 4 of us to do it but we managed.

Carter went off to play and I went inside the house and then I realized that Carter had tried to take care of everything himself. There was a blood trail from the kitchen table down the hall to the bathroom, on the cupboards where he tried to find bandaids. Quickly grabbed a piece of toilet paper to stop the bleeding. Then back to the kitchen to the other first aid cupboard where he did find band aids. That's when I arrived.

Carter has a high tolerance for pain so not one tear was shed. The next day (Thursday) the school nurse called me about 2:00pm and told me that Carters glue wasn't holding and his finger was bleeding all over. So another quick call to Shawn and we were on our way to the plastic surgeons office. When I picked up Carter from the nurse he told me he had played football and basketball at recess and nothing had happened to his finger. The problem was when his friend accidentally hit his hand and then it started bleeding. I don't know which planet he thinks I'm from but I went along with the story.

Plastic Surgeons office-4 shots in his tiny pinky, 3 stitches from back to front in his pink, one large band-aid, one hour, and we were home getting ready for a soccer game. No tears which means brothers can't call him a "girl" anymore when he cries.

WEAPON #2-OREO 100 CALORIE COOKIES

On Friday afternoon the school nurse called again. She quickly told me both kids were fine but Kennedy had an incident at lunch that I needed to know about. I was thinking she got in trouble, she spilled a drink on her clothes, she had thrown up--but I couldn't have been more wrong. Apparently Kennedy had purchased a 100 calorie snack pack of oreo cookies and she was eating them at lunch. She was laughing and got one caught in her throat. She couldn't breathe and the little girl sitting next to her quickly jumped up and went and found a cafeteria helper-ie; a mom who volunteers at lunch. The mom ran over to Kennedy and she told me later she was purple. She pounded her back a couple of times and she couldn't dislodge the object. So she raised Kennedy's arms and did the heimlech on her 3 times before the cookie came out. Needless to say everyone was relieved, Kennedy had a sore throat, and her chest was a little sore but she could breathe.
Later that night I called the mom who performed the heimlech and she told me that just recently her husband who is in the medical field had ask her to come with him to do some training which included the heimlech. She complained and didn't want to go but she did. After helping Kennedy she called her husband and thanked him for making her go.

I then called the mother of the little girl who went and got help and thanked her and told her how greatful we were that her daughter wasn't afraid of getting in trouble for getting out of her seat but just got up and ran for help.

So your choice of weapon??? Knife or 100 calorie pack of Oreos.

Wow! You need to add a little more stress to your life!

I'm glad both kids are OK.

I can't tell you how glad I am to have found your blog. I'M SO HOMESICK! Russell has OK'd moving back when he's done with school (in one more year) provided he can get a job. He says it's OK as long as we're in 3rd ward. I said that's fine with me!

Take care!

Oh my goodness! Can I pick no weapon?? I am so glad the kids survived and are fine! Which leads me to the conclusion, that maybe I should go take a CPR/heimlich refresher course. I sort of don't think being certified in high school (16+ years ago) really counts.

Stay safe you Shanklin's!!

Expected with the knife; scary with the oreos. I'm glad things turned out OK in both situations. Good to catch up with your family and get to know you better. I hope you're ready to share more family stories at YW camp! :)
